She also reflected on how this hands-on experience tied learning objectives regarding cultural competency and health disparities to the course.
“In treating the poor, there are a multitude of factors to consider,” she wrote. “The demographics of a population accounts for their health. There should be no judgment when treating or caring for individuals who may be from a completely different background than you. Any philanthropic activities must be culturally sensitive and ethical at all times. Caring for others is not always for someone who is sick, but can also mean supporting in other ways that might help them live better and happier lives.”
