Bileko Aziza Wissa, Mexican Trip
I was given the opportunity by Dr. Rose to participate in the weekend trip to Mexico through “Healthy Hearts Across Borders”, this past May 18th through May 20th. The experience was very eye opening.
Once we arrived in our first location, I was amazed at how the residents and patients knew we were on our way. They were already a line of patients lined up.
We drove up a hill, which was very interesting, because in the “States”, up a hill means wealth whereas in Mexico, up a hill means poverty. However, we unloaded the trucks and went to work.
I was given the opportunity to work with the Pharmacist. I really enjoyed counting the Ibuprofen, multivitamins, and Tylenol for the patients and handed out the packaged medication as well. I can tell they really appreciated, not only myself but the whole staff of medical doctors, medical students, the pharmacist, nurses, and dentists.
On Saturday, I was able to shadow a 3rd year USC Medical Student. You want to talk about eye opening! I wasn’t really sure if I could be a doctor even in the masters of biomedical science program. However, shadowing this doctor was wonderful because he was teaching me things and giving me confidence that made me believe, “hey I can do this, too. I have the personality, and likability that may have a positive effect on others.” This was the first time in my life I ever shadowed a doctor and it was needed because this “dream” was always a “dream”, however, now I can see it as a reality.
I plan on taking another trip with “Healthy Hearts Across Borders” again this summer. Actually I would love to go to Angola through CDU, if possible, or even Haiti. However, I had an absolute blast this past weekend in Mexico.
